St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral

With an hour to spare before our day-long tour to Phillip Island, A.-J. and I ducked into St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral in the heart of Melbourne city. The cathedral was built on the site of the first Christian services in Melbourne in 1836. The present cathedral was consecrated in 1891, and construction of the magnificent building continued well into the twentieth century. The exterior ornaments and interior design are far more ornate than Christchurch Cathedral, with exquisite wood carvings (including a possum climbing up a column in the rear of the church!), detailed mosaic tile floors, and a massive gold podium in the shape of an eagle.
